The 50 best movies on Netflix right now (January 2024)

Although The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been on Netflix for well over a month, it has once again climbed up near the top of the most popular movies on Netflix. The only thing more surprising than that is The Nest, an indie drama that had only a limited audience, is now at No. 4 on Netflix’s list. We can attribute that result to The Nest‘s two leading performers: Jude Law and Carrie Coon.

The Legend of Tarzan is also making a big splash on Netflix this week, proving there’s still some life for the classic pulp heroes. Meanwhile, The Society of the Snow and The Equalizer 3 are also hanging around the top 10 and proving themselves to be very popular among Netflix subscribers. That’s still a very strong lineup to kick off the year.

Are you having trouble keeping up with everything new on Netflix? Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered with our weekly update for the best movies on Netflix right now. And we keep this list updated every week on Friday, so you’ll always have the best choices at hand.

After the success of Barbie, it would probably take a lot to get Margot Robbie to come back for a secondary role like she had in The Legend of Tarzan. But this 2016 action-adventure film is impeccably well cast, with The Northman’s Alexander Skarsgård as the classic pulp hero, Tarzan, and Robbie as his wife, Jane. After retiring from a life in the jungle, Tarzan lives in London with his wife and now goes by his birth name, John Clayton III.

Regardless, Tarzan is compelled to return when an American named George Washington Williams (Samuel L. Jackson) implores him to expose Belgium’s slave trade in his own home. What Tarzan doesn’t know is that Belgian’s representative, Captain Léon Rom (Christoph Waltz), is already out to get him in order to give Tarzan to Chief Mbonga (Djimon Hounsou), who has his own vendetta against the King of the Jungle.

After convincing his wife, Allison O’Hara (Carrie Coon), to go along with his plans, Rory moves their entire family back to his native England.

Although the O’Hara family gets to live in an estate, their financial situation is dire, and Rory is not living in reality. As Allison and Rory’s marriage starts to crumble, Rory makes a last grasp at a business deal that will either be his financial salvation or his utter ruin.

Poor Things star Willem Dafoe stars as Bobby Hicks, the manager of a small tourist trap hotel that is designed for budget travelers to Disney’s theme parks. One of Bobby’s long-term residents is Halley (Bria Vinaite), the financially struggling mother of a six-year-old girl named Moonee (Brooklynn Kimberly Prince).

Although Bobby truly cares for Moonee’s well-being, he is rapidly running out of patience for Halley as she endangers her child and dips into sex work to survive. Not everyone can be happy in the self-proclaimed “happiest place on Earth.” And this is a story you won’t be forgetting anytime soon.

Netflix may have a real Oscar contender on its hands with Society of the Snow, a Spanish thriller by Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom director J. A. Bayona. This film is not the first to tell the story of the survivors of 1972 Uruguayan plane crash, which was most notably the subject of the American film Alive in 1993.

However, Bayona’s movie goes to far greater lengths to be authentic than the previous adaptations, including bringing production to the actual site of the crash and utilizing the real accounts of the survivors. Most of the cast members are also newcomers, which works in the film’s favor because it keeps the audience in suspense about who will live, and how far they will go to survive.

McCall also becomes close to the doctor who saved him, Enzo Arisio (Remo Girone), as well as the police officer who brought him to safety, Gio Bonucci (Eugenio Mastrandrea).

As McCall grows to love the town and its people, he realizes that the Italian mafia is terrorizing his new friends. And if anyone’s going to be terrorizing bad guys in this franchise, it’s Robert McCall. If you’re evil, don’t make McCall stand up. His stuntman will kill you.

It has laser swords like Star Wars, a galactic empire like Star Wars, rebel freedom fighters like Star Wars, and a plot straight out of Battle Beyond the Stars, The Magnificent Seven, and Seven Samurai.

None of those similarities will matter if you just want to watch a big-budget sci-fi movie from the comfort of your own home. On that front, director Zack Snyder has delivered exactly what he was supposed to. The story follows a group of warriors led by Kora (Sofia Boutella) as they make their stand against Motherworld and the Imperium on the remote world of Veldt. In the film, Whitney (Naomi Ackie) is supported by her friend-turned-lover Robyn Crawford (Nafessa Williams) before hitting the music industry like a tidal wave. As Whitney’s fame grows, she marries Bobby Brown (Ashton Sanders) and descends into drug addiction that threatens her career and even her life. And yet it’s impossible not to root for Whitney to pull herself out of that spiral.

In another, a lonely prospector (Tom Waits) digs for his fortune.

The title of this black-and-white drama, based on Nella Larsen’s celebrated 1929 novel of the same name, is a reference to the ability of some light-skinned African Americans to be perceived as white. The critically acclaimed film follows a pair of former childhood friends — portrayed by Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga — whose unexpected reunion brings tension into both of their lives as they navigate the segregated environment of 1920s New York City. André Holland and Alexander Skarsgård play supporting roles in the film, which is beautifully shot and surprisingly subtle given its powerful themes.

Hollywood stalwart Aaron Sorkin rises to the occasion once more with his blistering interpretation of the 1969 Democratic National Convention trials, where seven Vietnam protestors were charged with crimes well beyond their intent. As peaceful demonstrations turn caustic, prejudice bleeds into testimony and eyewitness accounts of what took place the day of the riots. Featuring performances from Eddie Redmayne, Sacha Baren Cohen, Alex Sharp, and John Caroll Lynch, Sorkin’s big-budget historical drama takes liberties here and there, but the result is a spellbinding examination of American history.
